The recent Rocket Arena was an unusual fun, kind of Super Smash Bros. in action format, only without popular heroes. But at the start they made so many mistakes that attempts to recruit an audience again did not work. After several hours in beta Knockout City it seems that the game can repeat the fate of the breathable Rocket Arena, but it still has a greater chance of success.

Easy to learn, but..

Two teams of three meet in a match and play dodgeball. Balls (both regular and special) are scattered throughout the map, and the participants’ task is to pick up these balls and throw them at their opponents. Each player has two health, so it takes two hits to kill. Despite the presence of auto-aim, skilled bouncers cannot be defeated by simple methods – there are enough mechanics here to constantly learn something new and perform better in every match.

The character has quite a large number of abilities, which are perfectly explained in a series of training levels. The ball can be thrown by pre-charging the throwing force. But you can not just launch it at the target, but do it beautifully by performing a somersault (for an overhead throw) or a turn (for a twisted one). In the first case, you will be able to throw the ball over a high obstacle, and in the second, it will go around a column or other obstacle.

The mechanics seem to be simple on paper, and all this is done with a couple of clicks, but after an accurate hit you get a huge thrill. You wounded the enemy, dodged his oncoming attack (this can be done with a separate dash button – you use it to push enemies), and he ran away behind the barrier. You grab his ball, which he didn’t take, charge up the attack and throw it in time after a somersault, earning a point for your team.

These moments are very cool, and the size of the maps allows you to find yourself in exciting situations quite often. This is also facilitated by other mechanics, including the ability to grab someone else’s ball on approach – an increasing red frame on the sides of the screen warns of an attack. If you want, exchange the ball with your opponent for a long time until a third player joins in and ruins your holiday. You can also make deceptive movements so that the opponent prepares to grab the ball ahead of schedule and temporarily becomes defenseless.

But the most interesting thing is the ability to take the shape of a ball yourself. You curl up and start rolling on the ground, hoping that someone will pick you up. Here Knockout City begins to reward team play – the “human ball” is stronger (kills on the first hit), and you can turn it into a real bomb by holding the throw button for a long time.

This mechanic works, and it works great. There is a limited number of balls on the map – some are already held in players’ hands, others are lying around in the corners, others have reappeared in certain areas. Therefore, when a serious battle begins, there may not be enough shells. And then you join the fight: roll up, roll towards your teammate, he automatically picks you up (and is often not ready for this – not everyone has figured out the mechanics yet) and defeats someone with your help. You can repeat the process or run away and eliminate the new target yourself – there are plenty of options.

The enemy can also grab you while you are in ball form. Some try to throw the opponent off the map, but the glider saves.

My own director

The fact that the game allows you to generate interesting moments on the fly, when you quickly react to events and emerge victorious, is the main reason why Knockout League unlikely to quickly lose its audience. So far, a lot of it seems thought out. The matches are short enough to make you want to take part in one more, eventually waking up late in the evening. There are no heroes with unique abilities – everyone is equal, like in Rocket League, so your knowledge is not scattered among different characters that someone on the team can take earlier.

The conditions and rules also generally do not change – the only difference is in the special balls. They, like ordinary ones, appear in certain places. These could be bomb balls that tick in your hands and explode after a few seconds. Or cage balls – the target they hit takes the shape of a ball and cannot come out of it. Or sniper balls – they can be sent over long distances. There is only one type of special ball on the map, so matches don’t turn into random chaos, but it does add the necessary variety.

All of the mechanics https://boomerangbetcasino.co.uk/bonus/ listed above work especially well in fights between two well-coordinated teams that have completed training and do not get confused with the buttons. Therefore, I really want to wait for the launch of the full version and plunge into the rating mode – it is not available in beta, but, judging by the menu, they will not delay with it for long after the release. Plus, they will allow you to assemble a squad in a special section of the menu – it is not necessary to look for allies on third-party sites.

In addition to the main mode, there are others. For example, a one-on-one fight, which is more suitable for finding out with a friend which of you is cooler. Or “Diamond Rush” – almost the same as a regular three-on-three, only defeated enemies drop diamonds that need to be collected. But the bonus entertainment is not as interesting as the standard mode, where the bulk of players will gather.

So far the only potential problem Knockout City I see a price tag. It is lower than Rocket Arena ($20, same as Fall Guys), but we still need a lot of support from streamers, otherwise the sad story will repeat itself. Yes, and it won’t be possible without microtransactions, even if they’re cosmetic. There are many possibilities for customization here: faces, hairstyles, glasses, gloves, suits, gliders (open in the air), and all sorts of ridicule and poses. Judging by the reviews, not everyone liked the visual style, but it is bright and quite suitable for a game with such dynamic gameplay.

If we compare Knockout City With Rocket Arena (although this is not entirely correct – the games have different approaches to gameplay), then the first one seems more promising. It’s easier to understand, you don’t have to remember which hero can do what and which card is best suited for. And the price is lower (although in a good way it would be better not to have it at all). Exclusively because of the distribution model, it is difficult to predict the fate of the game – it can either go unnoticed and be sold for three kopecks a month later, or win the attention of the public, who will sit in the “rating” and enjoy it. I would like to believe that the latter will happen, but for now we are waiting for the release on May 21 on PC and all current consoles.

Perfectly described my impressions of the game. If she were a freeplayer, she would definitely gain her popularity. But EA’s ingenious marketing decisions (hello Titanfall2 hello Rocket Arena) will ruin a game that has potential.

Can you explain, otherwise I don’t understand/assume what you mean?.

Competitive sessions, by which I meant all sorts of session shooters like CS, Overwatch, VALORANT, battle royales and other matchmaking sessions (For Honor, there, or something more specific) assume that their main audience (in fairly large numbers) plays them often and regularly. If players begin to view such a game primarily as “come in once in a while and play a game with friends” or “try once and move on/return as a group to another game,” then the game simply will not have enough players to maintain constant activity so that any player can log in at any time, click “find a match” and play with someone. After such a moment comes, players will stop even logging in and trying, as it will be a waste of time for them without results. The game will die.

p.s. By the way, I do not agree with the thesis in the first comment of the thread that developers must “understand” something. It’s better to let the big studios “don’t understand” and try to do something, giving a chance to something unusual and interesting to be born. And I doubt that they “don’t understand”; rather, they are testing the waters, trying to find an unoccupied niche in this format and become the first in it. Moreover, it is better not for Indy to go down this path, because.To. without advertising budgets, their work will only make it into the genre by accident – this is how quite interesting projects die from time to time.

I completely agree with the preview. fun and dynamic. a relatively small number of skills look balanced and allow you to hone your skills. When you manage to outplay an opponent who already understands what’s what, you get genuine pleasure. especially good to play with your team. but the price really feels high and it is because of this that the game can fail. here you could even think about buying, but there is a fear that at such a price there will not be an audience.

Well, judging by the comments and description of the post, on the contrary, the majority liked the game

Judging by the number of these comments, the majority are simply not interested in the game, despite the opportunity to try it for free. What is this if not a demonstration of what “what the hell people don’t need”?

and can be a good game for the evening for company

What a death sentence for competitive session play.

they rivet all the bleeding age, rocket arenas and don’t understand what ****** is, why don’t people need it, and here we go again

As for what the heck is needed – excuse me, but we have a biased attitude towards games / gaming is almost racism, is it a joke /. One part of the audience plays only hardcore games of their genre or setting. The other part will be put off by the childish design. Another part is that they don’t play anything other than one game/ like sorcery, fifa or maybe kotnra/.
Because of this, for example, few people undertake to do something new – especially from large studios.
The question can be asked differently – whose fault and who is to blame, is this good or not?.

thanks for the clear and detailed answer.

What do people need?? Casual games with a hardcore twist?

Well, judging by the comments and the description of the post, on the contrary, the majority liked the game and could be a good game for the evening for a company, and here you are showing off your bloated figure. Spanish shame for your fellow gamers.
